Toyota Venza is taking its love of pets to an all new level,
em-“barking” on a blitz of fun-filled events and promotions centered on
everything pets – and, of course, their owners too. Designed for
those with active lifestyles that often involve pets, the Venza offers
a full line-up of canine-friendly aftermarket pet products through
Toyota dealers that are already generating howls of approval from pet
lovers everywhere.
'More than 29 million Americans have traveled with their pets within the past three years,'
says Bob Zeinstra, national product marketing manager for Toyota Motor
Sales, USA, Inc., “and more than half of all dog owners consider their
pet’s comfort when buying a car. Our goal is to inform these on-the-go
pet owners that Venza is a great choice when it comes to creature
comfort and pet travel safety options.”
The Venza, which officially went on sale last month, offers more than a
dozen pet-friendly creature comforts, the most ever available through
Toyota dealerships. Venza’s large cargo capacity and rear hatch allow
for easy entrance and loading of pets. Available products include: a
rear hatch pet ramp for easy loading and unloading, a leash tether for
securing pets in the vehicle, a pet booster seat with harness, a
first/second row or cargo area pet barrier, pet seatbelt buckles and
rear seat zipline-style harnesses. Waterproof and removable
hammock-style seat covers are also available to fit Venza’s bench and
bucket seats. Venza, which combines the best features of a car and SUV,
is also the first Toyota passenger car to offer Star Safety as standard
equipment for all models.

Imagine your dog sailing through the air, ears flopping and tongue dangling. Then — splash! — as he catches the yellow tennis ball and simultaneously plunges into a pond. Cheers erupt from onlookers.
Your dog is a star. That’s the point of the 2008 Spook Splash and Dog Olympics. Spectators
and owners of any dog breed are welcome to the three-day event on
Buckingham Road in Fort Myers this week.

By Carla Hall, LA Times
If you're in a Los Angeles dog park and yell, "Here, Princess,"
don't be surprised if 1,262 Chihuahuas come running. There are that
many tiny pooches with the royal moniker registered in Los Angeles
County and almost 60,000 registered Chihuahuas in total, followed by
58,071 Labradors. This makes the little dogs the county's most popular
breed. Well, at least among those who bother to register their dogs.
This bit of trivia comes from "L.A.'s Top Dogs," a
new database compiled by The Times which covers half a million dogs registered in LA County. That's fewer than half the number of dogs actually living here, because
many pet owners don't comply with county and city requirements to
register them. Nonetheless, the database offers a fascinating census of
the dogs we live with and those we encounter including maps and most popular names.
Besides Princess, other popular names include Max, Buddy, Lucky, and Daisy. There are two dogs named 50 Cent. (A beagle and a Rottweiler.) There are dogs named Beyonce, George Bush and George Burns. There are Madonnas and 192 Shaqs. There is a pit bull named Bradpitt and a p ointer named Mike Piazza and 1,020 dogs named Kobe.

By Bob Keefer
Every show has at least one star who just might run off with the audience’s heart. In the Oregon Festival of American
Music production of “The Wizard of Oz,” which opens Friday at the Hult
Center, that actor’s name is Gracie.Gracie is the 4½-year-old Jack Russell
terrier/poodle mix who’s been cast as Toto, the dog that accompanies
Dorothy from Kansas to Oz.
Her career took off, almost in spite of
the Langs, when they took her to a trainer to help contain her outgoing
energy and, quite separately, noticed that strangers often stopped them
on the street to comment on how cute she was.Now Gracie, who performs about 40
different tricks — one is opening a Gail Lang’s purse, removing a
wallet and taking a dollar bill from it — has not only become a star of
stage and television (she’s done several commercials and has been on
local TV news) but also makes numerous live charity appearances in and
around Eugene.
With the help of former Elmira dog
trainer Chris Denning, Gracie — and the Langs — began making
appearances around town, helping out with fundraisers for everything
from the Rotary Club to the Eugene Symphony.
She’s raised more than $6,000 for
charity, Lang said. Gracie’s work also led her to be inducted into the
Oregon Animal Hall of Fame earlier this year. Full story...
