Colorado Springs has gone to the dogs - again. The city was named Dog Town, USA by Dog Fancy magazine. The city was chosen because it has ample dog friendly open spaces,
plenty of dog parks, cool events that celebrate dogs, high vet-to-dog
ratios, plenty of dog friendly businesses, and laws that protect pets. The honor comes on the heels of the city being named best city for dogs by Men's Health magazine.
Runners-up were Long Beach, Ca., Huntington Beach, Ca. and Coeur
d'Alene, Idaho, and Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. They were not ranked.
"Colorado Springs was impressive because of the number of dogs that
are adopted from the shelter (Humane Society of Pikes Peak region), 83
percent. That is a huge number and fabulous," said Susan Chaney, Dog
Fancy editor."We were also happy to see that Colorado Springs has no breed-specific legislation banning dogs."She noted that Denver used to be a favorite city with them until it banned pit bulls.
There are an estimated 87,000 dogs in Colorado Springs, and many of
them seemed to be at the Bear Creek Regional park's dog park
